Since the famous struggle led by Lech Walesa and the fall of the Soviet Union, Poland has been a leader among the ex-Soviet bloc countries in becoming a democracy, a capitalist economy, and a strong adherent to principles of the rule of law. During this transition, Poland has successfully faced many challenges in its transition from communism under the Soviet mantle, and this transition makes the University of Bialystok a unique study experience for American legal scholars and students. Courses in the program, which will include a combination of students from European (mostly Polish) and American law schools, will focus on the various topics in a country in political and economic transition, from labor rights to comparative free expression to rule of law more generally.
